History of Krohn Port Wines

The history of Krohn Port wines dates back to 1865, when the brand was founded by a young Norwegian named Theodor Wiese. Theodor had moved to Portugal to work in the wine trade and eventually decided to start his own business. He began by importing wine from Portugal to Norway, but soon realized that he could produce his own wine in the Douro Valley.

Theodor started by buying a small vineyard in the Douro Valley, which he named Quinta do Retiro Novo. He then set about learning the art of winemaking and began producing high-quality port wines using traditional methods. The business soon began to flourish, and Theodor was joined by his two sons, Dankert and Rodrigo.

The Krohn family continued to run the business until the 1970s, when it was sold to the Portuguese Port company, Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman. Today, Krohn Port wines are still produced using traditional methods, and the brand is owned by the Fladgate Partnership, which also owns other well-known port wine brands such as Taylor’s, Fonseca, and Croft.

Range of Krohn Port Wines

Krohn Port produces a range of different port wines, including Tawny, Ruby, and Vintage Port. The brand is known for its high-quality, full-bodied wines that are rich and complex in flavor.

Tawny Port

Krohn Tawny Port is aged in oak casks for several years, which gives it a smooth and mellow flavor. The longer the wine is aged, the more complex its flavor becomes. Tawny Port is available in different age categories, including 10-year-old, 20-year-old, and 40-year-old.

Ruby Port

Krohn Ruby Port is a young, full-bodied wine that is aged in oak casks for a shorter period than Tawny Port. This gives it a fruity and vibrant flavor that is ideal for drinking young. Ruby Port is available in different styles, including Reserve and Late Bottled Vintage (LBV).

Vintage Port

Krohn Vintage Port is made from the best grapes harvested in a single year. It is aged in oak casks for two to three years before being bottled, where it continues to age and develop for many years. Vintage Port is known for its rich, complex flavor and is considered to be the most prestigious of all port wines.
