Quote: <img align="left" alt="" />Priest is TOKYOPOP's third authentic Korean manhwa series.
Minn-Woo Hyung started Priest when he was still in his twenties, a young man who had only taken a brief introductory course in creating manhwa to indulge his love of Korean comics. This lack of schooling combined with a variety of Western influences would account for Priest's unique visual style. It looks and feels like a North American comic, not a Korean comic. Despite this, or perhaps partly because of this, Priest is currently the most popular manhwa series in Korea.
Its setting is the old American West, an era and place that is about as different from Korea as one can get, and yet the setting feels authentic, at least in regards to how that era was portrayed by the likes of John Houston and Sergio Leone. The small Frontier towns, the style of dress, the horses and even the steam locomotive cutting a path through an unbroken landscape create a tangible setting. One cannot almost feel dirt in one's teeth. The only thing out of place is a horde of zombies and the fallen priest who confronts them with pistols loaded with silver bullets and a wicked blade designed to send the undead back to grave; but, that's the whole point. That's where this story's charm lies. As outlandish as its premise may be, Priest works because Minn-Woo Hyung has populated it with believable characters and has set the whole affair against a fully realized Western backdrop.
The titular priest with the arsenal of weapons is Ivan Isaacs. He has sold his soul to the devil Belial for the power to fight the forces of the fallen archangel Temozarella, who are preparing the way for their Dark Lord's resurrection. Temozarella's minions were responsible for the death of many, including Isaacs' beloved, and when his cries for help to his own God went unanswered, Belial stepped in. Isaacs now has the power to carry out his vengeance, but he is also in the hands of a demon. Isaacs is truly a damned man.
